Stop 1: Nebraska, 2011–2014

After Nebraska's 2014 loss to Minnesota, Steven M. Sipple wrote that Bo Pelini “tried to take the bullet for Beck's awful fourth-quarter play call that basically stalled a drive that had picked up steam.” The sequence: second-and-1 at Minnesota's 41, Nebraska leading 24–21, and a pass after 14 consecutive third-quarter runs.

Stop 2: Ohio State, 2015–2016

The 2015 Michigan State loss produced 132 total yards and five first downs. Beck was part of the co-coordinator setup in the crosshairs as the offense collapsed on a national stage.

Stop 3: Texas, 2017–2019

A 2017 iPetitions page asking Texas to fire Beck collected 62 signatures and eight publicly displayed comments. On December 1, 2019, Tom Herman stripped Beck of play-calling authority and said Texas needed a “fresh set of eyes.” That is coach-speak for an offense that could no longer be trusted to its coordinator.

Coastal finished the 2025 regular season 6–6 and fired Beck on November 30 after the JMU loss. The last two games were a combined 110–17. The Independence Bowl, coached by interim Jeremiah Johnson, ended 23–14 to Louisiana Tech and made the final team record 6–7; that bowl loss is not charged as a Beck-coached game.

Mark Haines had written four months earlier: “By December, Tim Beck will be updating his resume.”

How the Offenses Fell Apart

How many times does the same alarm have to ring? A famous logo. A stocked roster. A confident press conference. Then the offense starts coughing up three-and-outs, the explanation machine starts smoking, and somebody else eventually gets handed the clipboard. This is what should make Bulls fans angry. It was not one bad Saturday. The same slide happened more than once, and teams often improved after Beck changed jobs or lost duties.

The 2015 Michigan State debacle was offensive malpractice in shoulder pads: five first downs and 132 total yards from a roster overflowing with NFL talent. Beck shared coordination duties with Ed Warinner. After both left those roles, Ohio State hired Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day, climbed from 459.2 yards and 39.4 points per game in 2016 to 506.0 yards and 41.1 points in 2017, and finished seventh nationally in total offense. The machine did not need excuses. It needed different mechanics.

Tom Herman reassigned Beck after the 2019 regular season and publicly demanded a “fresh set of eyes.” Then Texas walked into the Alamo Bowl and flattened No. 11 Utah 38–10 with 438 total yards. The scoreboard screams: the first game after Beck lost play-calling authority became Texas’s most convincing performance of the season. Apparently the fresh eyes could see the end zone.

NC State’s 2022 defense allowed only 19.2 points per game. The offense answered that gift with 24.3 points per game, 4.84 yards per play and eight rushing touchdowns across 13 games. The Wolfpack ranked 94th in points per game, 116th in yards per play and 91st in PFF offensive grade. That is not complementary football. That is a defense hauling an offense uphill like a broken refrigerator. Robert Anae’s first post-Beck team improved to 26.2 points per game and finished 9–4. It was not a huge jump, but the numbers moved the right way under a new coordinator.

Coastal Carolina: inherited momentum, delivered a crater

This should set off every alarm in Tampa. Coastal went 31–6 from 2020 through 2022 and scored 40.9 points per game in 2021. Beck inherited that program and went 8–5, then 6–7, then 6–6 before being fired. The full 2025 team finished 6–7, averaged 22.2 points, managed only 4.85 yards per play and was outscored 430–288. The blowouts read like a distress signal: 48–7, 38–0, 47–7, 51–7 and finally 59–10. Beck did not coach the bowl loss, so do not charge it to his personal record. You do not need to. The crater was already visible from orbit.

And the ugliest detail? Beck fired offensive coordinator Travis Trickett during the 2024 season and took over play-calling himself. By the end of the following season, Coastal had produced a 0-point game, three separate 7-point games and a 10-point finale. When the man in charge grabs the wheel and the car still hits every guardrail, stop blaming the map.

BOTTOM LINE: Beck's trail is littered with scoring droughts, public anger, stripped duties and firings. USF put him back in charge of an offense anyway. Every stalled drive is another warning, not another excuse.
